Jellyfish Research Laboratories is a social biotech startup located in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama from Institute of Physical and Chemical Research. They work on improving biodiversity, marine conservation and life science by utilizing jellyfish.
The amount of jellyfish in the ocean is skyrocketing these days because of the rising sea temperatures caused by global warming, and it is becoming a serious problem today. There has been a lot of damages from massive outbreak of jellyfish reported from all over the world. The cluster of jellyfish hurts gill nets set in the ocean. They become predators of planktons and collapse the marine ecosystem. Moreover, the nuclear power plant was shut down because of the invasion of jellyfish. In Japan, we have been putting a lot of money just to dispose of the excessive amount of jellyfish instead of utilizing them as resource.
Jellyfish Research Laboratories is now tackling the problem. The company produces biomass-based food and cosmetics using jellyfish and they are sourced only from the coast of Japan so that they avoid to overfish. Although jellyfish biomass is hard to be converted to fuel because they are mainly made of water, salt, and protein, it is a high-potential resources that can be used for feed, fertilizer, and fiber.
