Sta.R Grand Opening Celebration — Я Gallery 1st Exhibition《circle to circle》by Mikiko Kamada, held simultaneously
Just one minute from the ticket gates. A new hub for urban resource circulation is born.
Retired fire hoses transformed into disaster-preparedness pouches that bridge the everyday and the emergency. The process of flowers returning to soil, reframed by a single gaze into a work of art. Waste materials from a school gymnasium, breathed back to life through glass and lacquer.
Sta.R (Station R), a creative hub for circular culture located inside Hoshikawa Station, is now officially opening its doors. To mark the occasion, we are hosting “R Fes” — a one-day-only opening festival. We have prepared a special program of events that lets you experience the materials, products, and makers’ stories of Sta.R with all five senses.
Held simultaneously is the inaugural exhibition at the in-house gallery “Я gallery”: a solo show by artist Mikiko Kamada titled《circle to circle》. Inspired by her work at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, this installation weaves together the cycles of life, the circulation of materials, and the connections between people and cities. From flowers to soil, from school to city, from Osaka to Yokohama — come and experience this story of ever-turning cycles in person.

About R Fes
To celebrate the full opening of Sta.R (Station R), we are hosting “R Fes” — an opening event showcasing the diverse features, products, and artworks found inside the venue. The in-house gallery space “Я gallery” will mark its debut with a solo exhibition by artist Mikiko Kamada:《circle to circle》.

Content Highlights
Fire Hose Disaster-Preparedness Pouch Workshop
Using retired fire hoses as the raw material, participants will craft a pouch for everyday use. While handling the tough, distinctive texture of fire hose material, you can enjoy the process of seeing waste transformed into something new.

Coloring Workshop
Enjoy an original coloring sheet by artist Miki Tomine (遠峯未来, Tomine Miki), featuring plants and animals that inhabit local rivers.
Miki Tomine (遠峯未来) | Born in Kanagawa Prefecture. Her practice focuses on making community commons visible and creating opportunities for connection through that process. At Hoshiten qlay, she previously held an exhibition themed around the Katabira River, which flows through Yokohama — researching the creatures that live in the river, mapping where each species was found, and presenting the work as an immersive spatial installation.

Simultaneous Exhibition | Я Gallery 1st Exhibition《circle to circle》by Mikiko Kamada
Exhibition period: Saturday, September 19, 2026 – Sunday, October 18, 2026, 15:00–19:00
Mikiko Kamada — who successfully presented work at the signature pavilion “Adventure of Life in Circulation” at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai — presents《circle to circle》, an installation in which life, materials, and the works themselves are passed on to generate new cycles of circulation. This is the inaugural exhibition at Я gallery, opening in 2026 as a relay point in the EXPO to EXPO journey (Osaka → Yokohama), ahead of GREEN EXPO next year. A gallery talk with the artist will also be held on the opening day.
《circle to circle》is an installation in which one cycle gives rise to the next. Taking《flower compost》— permanently exhibited at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai — as its starting point, the work constructs a space where the cycles of life, the circulation of materials, and the connections linking people and cities all intersect. On display are《flower compost》itself, video documentation of flowers being broken down by microorganisms, and glass works symbolizing invisible forms of life. The exhibition also features new works created in collaboration with Dutch lacquer artist twofold, using waste materials recovered from school gymnasiums in Yokohama by Creative Circular City Collective — the operator of Sta.R — in partnership with the City of Yokohama.
From flowers to soil. From school to city. From Osaka to Yokohama. Each cycle is not a closed loop, but one that connects with others to generate something new.
Profile: Mikiko Kamada — Artist, Doctor of Agriculture, Plants Director
Mikiko Kamada completed her doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Horticulture, Chiba University. Drawing on her background in life sciences, she began her career as a plants director, bringing an academic perspective to her practice. In 2015, she unveiled Tanicushion®, a cushion that recreates the appeal of succulents as an indoor greening tool. She currently researches the reconceptualization of the relationship between plants and people, and the importance of soil and plants in urban environments, working toward the creation of nature-positive urban spaces. In parallel, she continues to produce installations and artworks exploring the presence of plants and microorganisms as an extension of this inquiry.《flower compost》— in which flowers inside a jar are broken down by microorganisms — has evolved beyond the realm of art into an ongoing project that cultivates awareness of circulation. At Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, her work《Infinite Metamorphosis》was permanently installed at the signature pavilion “Adventure of Life in Circulation.”

The fire hose workshop requires advance reservation and is limited to 6 participants. Please purchase a ticket via the Peatix page linked below to reserve your spot. Please also be aware that photos and videos will be taken inside the venue for documentation purposes. These may be used in promotional materials, on social media, and in reports.
