Upcycled Stationery Crafted from Discontinued Nautical Charts: From retired sea maps to everyday treasures
- On 2026/1/6
Old sea maps still have stories to tell. This “Discontinued Nautical Chart Stationery” project by X-Port Co., Ltd. gives discontinued nautical charts a second life as beautifully crafted stationery and sundries. Once essential for safe navigation, these charts are regularly retired as coastlines and sea conditions change. Instead of becoming waste, they’re transformed into envelopes, tote bags, memo pads, fans, and more.
Each item is truly one of a kind. Because the charts depict waters from all around Japan, no two products share the same depths, contours, or lighthouse markings. Even the off-cuts are reused, shaped into charming lighthouse bookmarks, pushing the idea of near-zero waste.
Supported by Yokohama City, the project also gives back: part of the proceeds supports ocean conservation. It’s a playful reminder that circular design can connect the sea, the city, and our daily routines.
