Yokohama Blue Carbon

Yokohama has been developing as a port town, and the fishery was used to be a vital industry. Yokohama city was selected as “SDGs Future City” that is part of the “SDGs Action Plan” in 2018 led by the Japanese government. Yokohama city is now working on “the Yokohama Blue Carbon Project,” which includes “Blue Caron” and “Blue Resource.”

Blue Carbon is a type of carbon credit that is stored in coastal and marine ecosystems.
Blue Resource is another type of carbon credit that effectively uses resources in coastal and marine environments. This project is the first-ever verified carbon offset.

1.Utilize Ocean Resources

Although green carbon is becoming a common carbon credit, Yokohama city focuses on ocean resources, representing Yokohama’s uniqueness. Considering the submarine environment around Japanese territory, blue carbon will likely enhance its amount in the future. Yokohama city has developed its carbon offset certification system and attempts to preserve the local environment and create new jobs.

2.Regenerate Marine Ecosystems and Local Fishing Industry

Yokohama city funds to preserve and regenerate marine ecosystems through the blue carbon project. The project helps increase COs absorption and create new jobs and opportunities for the local fish industry.

3.Create New Local Connection Through the Project

Yokohama city shares its information on the blue carbon project with other local authorities. For instance, they have given Yokohama carbon offset certifications to Hyuga city in Miyazaki and Hannan city in Osaka. Yokohama city continues to spread their knowledge and create new connections.
